MARTIN, Donald Arthur, BA, LLB

Passed away suddenly at the age of 76 on Tuesday, January 24, surrounded by family. Survived by his wife Joan of 50 years, daughters Ann (Greg), Carol (Geoff), and Joy (Scott). Loving 'Grandon' to Andrew, Katie, Charlotte and Amy.

Don was born in Port Arthur, Ontario (now Thunder Bay) and educated at Port Arthur Collegiate Institute, McMaster University and Osgoode Law School. He remained an active and colourful figure in the legal and business communities of Northwestern Ontario from the 1960s through the 1990s. He was a founding partner of the law firm Martin Scrimshaw Scott, and an adventurous entrepreneur.

Don was a skilled pilot who flew widely in his beloved Piper Cub, a car enthusiast who rallied in his Morgan whenever possible, duck hunter, dog breeder and world traveller. He taught business law at Lakehead University, gave legal advice to non-profit organizations, and supported a number of local arts and historical groups.

In recent years, he and Joan divided their time among the family camp at Two Island Lake near Thunder Bay, and residences in Barrie and Tucson. Don was a man of strong principles, passionate beliefs and contrarian perspectives. He leaves behind many dear friends, colleagues and business associates. His marriage and family always came first, and he will be deeply missed by all.

Remembrance gatherings will be held at later dates in Thunder Bay and Tucson. For more information, including donations in Don's memory, please visit www.steckleygooderham.com.

Morgans in Cornwall, UK

Graeme  visited the UK in July 2011 and spent a week in Cornwall. He sought out and paid a visit to a local Morgan dealership, Perranwell Garage.   Two brand new Morgans and two used ones for sale, plus five customer vehicles for service and other work.

The Morgan Motor Company located in Britain doesn’t change in a changing world. Not only is it still independent, but it also makes each car by hand.  A base model is about $44,000, with some cars costing up to $300,000.  People wait for over a year to get their exclusive hand-built cars with the shell made out of metal and much of the vehicle made out of wood.   Working on the wood interior, workers use metal shears to individually shape a hood because each car has to be different.

Every year Morgan produces about 600 cars. The company will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2011. It has a long and interesting history, and is still run by the same family: the Morgans.  Founded by Henry Frederick Stanley Morgan known as “HFS”, it was then run by his son Peter, and is now run by Charles, the son of Peter Morgan.
